Automatic Knife Setting

Automatic knife positioning is available on new equipment supplied by Universal Converting Equipment or as an upgrade to existing slitting equipment from a range of manufacturers. An analysis has shown that during a job change on a slitting machine, most of the time lost is due to positioning the knives, moving core chucks and aligning cores. Universal now offer solutions to eliminate most of this downtime.

Universal Converting Equipment can offer automatic knife positioning for both razor slitting and shear slitting. The system is controlled by a touch screen operator interface. If the job has been run previously, the operator can recall the setting from the recipe memory, otherwise they enter the slit widths required and the system does the rest. The required positions for the knives are calculated and an electric actuator moves the knives precisely into position. Once in position they are locked securely in place.

When combined with a Converter Guide 3 Digital web guiding system, Computacore^TM core alignment system, and full differential shafts, a changeover which may have taken one hour can be completed in less than five minutes.
